Fishing Codex legal
Privacy Policy
Fishing Codex · Effective 26 May 2026 · Last updated 26 June 2026
Plain-language summary: Fishing Codex is a fishing log, buyer app, and angler marketplace. Public surfaces never show exact GPS coordinates. Marketplace payments are processed by Stripe on the angler's connected Stripe Standard account. Account deletion is self-serve and is full account deletion, not deactivation. GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other local privacy rights are handled through the account tools or support.
1. Who we are
Fishing Codex is a mobile fishing app and web marketplace for anglers worldwide, published and operated by FISHINGCODEX LIMITED. We are the controller for the personal information described in this policy.
2. What we collect
2.1 Account and sign-in
- Sign in with Apple or Google identifier: a stable identifier supplied by Apple or Google. We never see your Apple ID or Google password.
- Email address: your real email, Apple private relay address, Google account email, or email-code sign-in address. We use it for sign-in, receipts, legal notices, and support.
2.2 Entries, catches, and photos
- Entry data: entry name, notes, species tags, tide-station assignment, public/private flag, listing state, and the GPS coordinates of the pin.
- Catch logs: species, length, weight, date/time, conditions, and notes you choose to save.
- Photos: uploaded photos are stored as compressed image files with EXIF metadata stripped, including embedded GPS, camera serials, device fingerprints, and original timestamps.
2.3 Location and tracks
Fishing Codex uses foreground-only location permission when you choose to save an entry or use map/location features. If you record a foreground track, GPS breadcrumbs are stored only on your device. Track data is not uploaded.
2.4 Marketplace purchases, claims, and entitlements
When you buy, subscribe, purchase lifetime access, or claim a free listing, we store the entitlement needed to unlock that access in your Fishing Codex account. For web payments, Stripe sends us transaction identifiers, charge status, amount, currency, product, and fee information. FCL does not receive your full card number or payment credentials.
2.5 Angler and payout data
If you become a paid angler, Stripe collects identity, tax, business, and bank details directly through Stripe hosted onboarding. We receive your Stripe connected-account identifier, account status, payout-readiness state, and payout/order summaries needed to operate the marketplace.
2.6 Diagnostics and support
Crash reports may include app version, build, OS version, device model, account ID, coarse region, and stack trace. Sentry Session Replay is disabled. Crash events do not include entry notes, exact GPS coordinates, photos, or catch free-text content.
2.7 Cookies, local storage, and preferences
The web app uses necessary authentication cookies, security/session cookies from Supabase, Stripe checkout/session records during payment flows, and local device storage for preferences such as appearance, text size, high-visibility mode, language, and currency display. We do not use advertising cookies, third-party tracking pixels, behavioural ad profiles, or cross-site ad retargeting. If we add non-essential analytics or marketing cookies later, we will add a consent control where required before enabling them.
3. What we do not collect
- Contacts, calendar, microphone, health, or motion data.
- Advertising identifiers, ad SDKs, third-party tracking pixels, or behavioural ad profiles.
- Background location.
- Card numbers, payment credentials, full bank account numbers, or full government identity documents.
- Exact GPS coordinates in public page metadata, URLs, Open Graph tags, or share text.
- Personal information for sale or sharing with third-party advertisers.
4. Payments, Stripe, and angler payouts
Web marketplace: Stripe processes each paid web marketplace order as a direct charge on the angler's connected Stripe Standard account. The angler is the merchant of record for their own sale. FCL collects a 15% application fee. Stripe processing fees, refunds, disputes, compliance holds, and payout timing are controlled by Stripe and the connected account.
FCL does not hold or pool buyer funds. Angler payouts are handled by Stripe to the angler's bank account after Stripe has completed its checks and according to the angler's Stripe payout schedule.
App Pro: App Pro is processed separately by Apple or Google through in-app purchase. FCL receives store receipt data to grant the subscription entitlement, but not the card number or store payment credentials.
5. GPS privacy and marketplace visibility
Exact GPS is treated as sensitive. The product is designed so public browsing shows enough context to decide whether a listing is relevant without exposing the precise pin.
| Surface | What is visible |
|---|---|
| Public heatmap | Aggregated and fuzzed to roughly 10 km. It is not a coordinate lookup tool. |
| Public listing before purchase or claim | Angler profile, listing name, photos, species/context, and approximate region. Exact GPS is not shown. |
| After purchase, lifetime access, active subscription, or valid free claim | The exact location syncs to the buyer's Fishing Codex account and appears in the buyer app. Coordinates are not displayed as public text. |
| Angler payout profile | Public users see handle, display name, avatar, listings, and public profile copy. They do not see legal name, address, tax ID, or bank details. |
6. Free claims and temporary access
Some anglers may offer free claims. Free claims use a small number of lifetime claim slots enforced per account and per device (currently 3, with bonus slots available through friend referral); each claim grants access for 5 days, and a used slot is not returned when the claim expires. An active App Pro subscription lifts these limits while it remains active. The app shows the current rule at the time of claim. A free claim is temporary access to angler-owned content. It is not a purchase, subscription, or permanent export right.
7. How we use information
- To run the app: save entries, log catches, sync data, display maps, and manage tide/weather context.
- To grant and revoke entitlements for web purchases, subscriptions, lifetime access, free claims, and App Pro.
- To operate Stripe Standard Connect angler onboarding, direct charges, fees, and payout status.
- To compute public heatmap information using fuzzed/aggregated location data.
- To detect fraud, payment abuse, suspicious claims, and unsafe marketplace activity.
- To respond to support, privacy, deletion, and legal requests.
- To meet tax, accounting, consumer-law, platform, and lawful-production-order obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, use it for third-party advertising, or build advertising profiles.
8. Data export and account deletion
8.1 Data export
Data export is for permanently-owned data: your account record, entries and catches you created, photo metadata for your own content, and permanent access records where applicable. It does not export angler-owned subscription entries or free-claimed entries. Temporary access remains governed by the subscription or claim entitlement.
8.2 Account deletion
You can request full account deletion from native app settings (Me → Settings → Danger Zone → Delete account), from web account settings at fishingcodex.com/account/settings, or by contacting support. The self-serve deletion flows are intended to satisfy Apple App Store Review Guideline 5.1.1(v): they delete the account itself, not just deactivate it. Cloud account data, user-created entries, catches, uploaded photos, claims, purchases, and entitlements are deleted or anonymised, except for limited records we must retain for law, tax, fraud prevention, chargeback handling, or marketplace accounting — except photo files that another user's paid purchase snapshot still depends on, which are retained for those buyers only.
Deletion is permanent. Before deleting, export any permanently-owned data you want to keep. See Delete Account for user-facing steps.
9. Third parties and processors
| Provider | What they process |
|---|---|
| Stripe Inc. | Web marketplace direct charges; angler Stripe Standard onboarding; KYC, tax, bank, fees, disputes, and payout records |
| Apple Inc. | Sign in with Apple identifier and email relay; App Pro in-app purchase receipts and store payment processing |
| Google LLC | Google sign-in identifier and email; Google Play Billing receipts and store payment processing |
| Supabase Inc. (AWS Sydney) | Account records, entries, catch data, photo metadata, entitlements, order records, and app sync data |
| Cloudflare Inc. | DNS, edge delivery, and photo object storage via R2 |
| Sentry (Functional Software Inc.) | Crash reports and diagnostic metadata; Session Replay disabled |
| Open-Meteo | Coordinates of the entry or viewport used to request weather and marine-conditions context; no account identifier |
| Resend, Inc. | Email address, message content, and delivery status for sign-in codes, receipts, and operational email |
| OpenFreeMap / CARTO | Map tile requests based on viewport coordinates; no Fishing Codex account identifier |
10. Your rights
10.1 General privacy rights
You may have rights to access, correct, delete, object to, restrict, or port personal information under the laws that apply where you live, including the NZ Privacy Act 2020, Australian Privacy Act 1988, EU/UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other non-excludable local privacy rights.
10.2 EU/UK GDPR basics
Where EU or UK privacy law applies, our main legal bases are performance of contract for account, sync, purchase, subscription, and angler-marketplace services; legitimate interests for safety, fraud prevention, diagnostics, abuse prevention, and product security; legal obligation for tax, accounting, payout, chargeback, and lawful-request records; and consent where a feature specifically asks for it.
Depending on the context, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, withdrawal of consent, or review of a privacy concern. You may also complain to your local supervisory authority. We aim to respond to GDPR and UK GDPR requests within one month unless the law allows more time for a complex request.
10.3 California CCPA/CPRA basics
For California residents where the CCPA/CPRA applies, you may request to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect, the sources and purposes for collection, the categories of third parties we disclose information to, correction of inaccurate personal information, deletion of personal information, and portability of information you provided. You may use an authorised agent where the law allows, subject to verification.
Fishing Codex does not sell personal information or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights. We use precise location and payment-related information only to provide requested app, marketplace, security, fraud-prevention, legal, and accounting services, not for third-party advertising.
10.4 How to exercise rights
Use native app settings or web account settings at fishingcodex.com/account/settings where available, or email [email protected] with the subject “Privacy request”. We aim to respond within 20 working days for NZ privacy requests and within the time required by applicable local law.
11. Retention and security
- Account, user-created entries, catches, and uploaded photos: kept while your account is active, then deleted or anonymised after account deletion unless legal retention applies — except photo files that another user's paid purchase snapshot still depends on, which are retained for those buyers only.
- Photo files: stored with EXIF stripped and served through protected URLs where applicable.
- Crash reports: retained for a limited diagnostics window, with account identifiers purged or anonymised on deletion where technically available.
- Tax, chargeback, payout, dispute, and accounting records: retained only as long as required for legal, accounting, fraud-prevention, or payment-network obligations.
Traffic uses TLS. Database access is restricted by Row-Level Security. We do not place exact GPS coordinates in URLs, query strings, share text, or public metadata.
12. Changes and contact
We update this policy when product behaviour, subprocessors, or legal requirements change. For material changes, we will surface an in-app or web notice where practical.
